NACH meaning and what NACH is
In a very simple way, NACH means the automated way to move money from one bank to another in bulk, on schedule, without the payer having to act each time.
Now what is NACH in everyday life? Imagine you have taken a loan and you have an EMI of Rs. 20,000 on the 5th day of every month; there are two options for you to make payment to the lender.
You make your payment of Rs. 20,000 manually every month
You give the lender permission in advance to automatically deduct your EMI from your bank account.
So, the second option you can choose is the NACH method, where you authorize your lender to deduct the mandated amount from your bank account monthly, quarterly, or annually.
What is a NACH mandate
The NACH mandate meaning is clear and straightforward: it is an electronic or written authorization you provide to your lender to debit a certain amount of money from your bank account
The NACH meaning usually records details such as
Account holder Full name
Bank account number
Bank name and branch
IFSC code
Amount to be debited
Frequency of payment (monthly, quarterly)
Start date and end date of the mandate
Purpose of the payment
How NACH works?
Let's understand the steps of how NACH works.
Step 1: NACH mandate is initiated: in this step you fill out a physical form or register digitally, authorizing the banks or company to debit the amount.
Step 2: Verification: In this step your bank verifies you, in which they confirm or reject your application.
Step 3: Debit instruction: On the due date, the bank submits a debit request through its bank to the NACH system; this is your 3rd step in the process.
Step 4: Processing: NPCI routes the request to your bank.
Step 5: Amount debit: This is the final step where your bank account has been debited through NACH mandate and passed on to the bank’s account.
Types of NACH
When we talk about the types of NACH, there are mainly two types of NACH.
NACH debit: In NACH debit, your bank account is debited by the mandate amount, for example: Personal loan EMI, insurance premium, SIP, utility bill.
NACH Credit: In NACH credit, the customer or beneficiary account is credited by a certain amount, for example, pension, salary, dividend, or interest payment.
How to cancel a NACH Mandate
The precise procedure for cancelling a NACH mandate varies depending on your bank and the firm holding the mandate, but the fundamental procedures are as follows:
First, go over your responsibilities. If you have an ongoing loan or policy, cancelling the mandate does not free you from your responsibilities. You'll need a different way to pay on time.
Call the company (lender, insurance company, or biller) and ask that the mandate be cancelled or changed.
Find out from your bank how to cancel a mandate or stop a payment, and then let them know through their office, online banking, or customer service.
Keep a digital or paper copy of the request approval.
Check your bills to make sure there aren't any extra charges.
